We have been waiting a long time for the news and it has finally come. They are calling this “a signature moment” and it truly is~ Osama bin Laden has been killed. The United States is responsible for his death and it is a moral victory; an enormous boost to our military and our allies who devote their lives to protecting us from the atrocities of terrorism.
I couldn’t be more proud of the men and women serving in this capacity. I couldn’t be more proud of their families at home ~ your sacrifice has led to this day of reckoning. THIS is a good day…a day of justice.
Of course the tweets and Facebook posts are celebratory in nature, as they should be. Evil has been extinguished. But I wonder about some of the posts that demand “our boys come home” with this one death, however monumental. I have never served in the military but as a military spouse for over 2 decades, I know that a strong military presence all over the world is absolutely critical to keep us safe. It’s not pleasant to endure the long separations and it’s certainly not pleasant to have your loved ones in peril but it’s a voluntary military and they know what they have signed up for. Thank GOD we have such selfless people.
The demise of Osama doesn’t mark an end to the need for our troops in that region of the world. There are dozens more terrorists ready to step in and be the figurehead for al-Qaeda. Dozens? Maybe hundreds. There is a group of individuals, my friends, who really hate everything we stand for. That will not end with Osama’s death ~ in fact, the hate will intensify and be fueled by this news.
Let’s be thankful that justice has been served tonight. Let’s be thankful that there is one less person on this earth who seeks harm against innocent people.
Let’s say a prayer of thanks for those who serve today and will continue to serve to protect our soil. Your service is invaluable.
Sleep well.
