The news this morning reported that there’s an app now, called “Sonar”, that will allow the user to pop in to any public place and find out who is standing around them or who is even on the same street! If you’re logged in to Facebook, Twitter or various other social networks on your phone (and most people never log out of those sites on their phones), then your cute little profile picture and name pop up on the Sonar users screen.
Think about your daughter or wife standing in Starbucks while a potentially creepy guy, with a touch of a button, gathers a name and photo of your unsuspecting loved one. Here’s the thing~ I love that Facebook has reconnected me with people and I even enjoy, for the most part, their vacation memories and achievements. However, I feel like I’m standing in the middle of a highway with no clothes on.
Know what I mean? We’re all a little over-exposed. Naked. Just OUT there and not only is Big Brother watching…but now all of the little brothers and sisters are watching, too.
Let’s face it, there’s not much we can do about all of the biometrics being gathered about us or all of the cameras pointing at us constantly. Progress is good, right?
I don’t know. I probably sound paranoid but I just can’t shake this vulnerability that social networks, GPS and blogs (gasp!) are causing. I long for the days without cellphones and iPads sometimes. Remember when no one knew where you were unless you actually told them? Remember when you would go to the beach for the day and not be interrupted a thousand times by email, direct messages and texts? That”s right, kids, you actually spoke to the people next to you~ in person!
Sorry. Clearly, I need a vacation on a mountain top with no cell phone tower in sight. My beloved 4G iPhone is quickly becoming my nemesis. I want to break up with social networks, with being on 24/7 call via cell phone, and maybe even with writing a blog. There are definite thoughts of moving to a cave…and, if I go, I won’t be giving a forwarding address.
Be blessed,
Amy
