What a fascinating summer we’ve had ~ weather wise, anyway.  It’s been hotter than blue blazes in most of the country, nasty wet in others (my house, for example), and even as I write this a hurricane has left its mark on Louisiana.  I often wonder if my recollection of summers from long ago is even accurate. Was it really just hot and sunny with that predictable summer hiccup of a thunderstorm mid-day?

Our memories are so skewed. We’re just designed to remember the best part of things… like childhood summers, high school crushes, teaching babies to walk and dropping kids off for practice.  What a blessing it is that our minds can dull most of the negative stuff over the course of time.

I have a theory, though. My theory is that God lets some of the negative stuff “stick” in our memories~ not to torture us but to protect us.  If we didn’t remember the first time our heart was really broken, for instance, we wouldn’t guard and protect it. At the same time, if He didn’t leave us the good memories (even the ones we exaggerate), looking back over our lives would be utterly futile.

At the risk of sounding overly “Christian” this early in the morning, I’ll just go ahead and say it. God is good. I thank Him for creating us in such a way that we can eventually look at our difficult times with fresh eyes. I thank Him that we can remember some carefree afternoons of our youth like it was yesterday… and we can smile…even though everyone knows that being 13 isn’t carefree and easy.

He gives us what we need… the bad to learn from…the good to embrace…the bad to sharpen our discernment…the good to celebrate and covet.

I am thankful for all memories this morning and looking forward to making so many more. Have a blessed day, friends.   ~Amy

  1. Thanks for the reminder that difficult times eventually streighten out and we can look back on them with fresh eyes. To me, you will never sound ‘too Christian’. The Holy Spirit is speaking through you. God Bless you, Ms. Amy. Fabulous writing.
