Yesterday was a blustery, miserable day outside. It wasn’t like Buffalo or Duluth miserable but it was uncharacteristically gloomy on a day that Tampa historically celebrates on Bayshore Blvd., with one of the prettiest scenic backdrops that this area has to offer. The bad weather left thousands of people disappointed.

For us, it was a nice change of pace, though. We decided early in the day that we weren’t leaving the house. Fortunately, I saw it coming on Friday and bought ingredients for a nice pot of soup. With Nick off to the Gasparilla parade, we pulled the shades and settled in to movie #1 around 11am. This literally never happens in our house; we usually have weekends planned in advance. We generally keep “free time” booked up and then grumble about it when Monday rolls around…”where did the weekend go?” “okay, seriously, next weekend we’re not making plans”, etc. We’re full of good intentions and empty promises.
Yesterday was different. The dogs were nestled in blankets in the dark livingroom and we were equipped with all of the remotes necessary for perfect surround sound. Now I won’t lie; we flirted with the idea of going to the mall around 5 or so. Why? Because this whole sitting still thing is foreign to us. We don’t take enough time to just do nothing.
Life doesn’t have to be about agendas; in fact, shouldn’t we consider blocking off weekends with a lot of nothingness? A lot of just hanging with the kids, watching movies, making great meals, reading, having friends over, going to the beach…whatever really feeds our soul.
My soul was really fed yesterday by spending uninterrupted time with my husband, doing some reading, catnapping, a lot of nothingness. And it was good.
